Chronicles of Food

Today's post shall be a collation of photos! I seriously think blogger should do something about photo uploading, each time I upload a photo, it messes up my text again! And dragging the photos up and down isn't very smooth either.

16th Feb: On the 3rd day of CNY, met up with Hilda to go Uncle Seow's house to 'pai nian', also the day I got my navel piercing.. woohoo! At Uncle Seow's house, his wife cooked really delicious chicken curry, microwave oven chicken wings and fried sotong balls! Sad to say, I was too busy eating to take any photos... haha.. so I shall just leave photos of us girls wearing shades! How cute..

21st Feb: The Yong Tau Foo that I vomitted after hill sprints... This was at a store in Simpang Bedok, it was really good but the waiting time was pretty long. But definitely worth the wait because everything tasted really fresh and they fry everything for you on the spot. A place I would consider going back to again!

22nd Feb: Crossfit Supper - Hotpot @ Liang Seah St, definitely ate too much.. the photos below were only the tip of the beginning, so much in between that I was too busy eating to take any photos.. check out the total damage in the last photo, too many plates!

That's all for now. There's a whole backload of post-worthy (ie. nonsense) photos I have in my iPhone but too little time (ie. L-A-Z-Y) to upload them into blogger.

CrossFit WODs

Mon, 22/02/2010

4 rounds
15 kettlebell swings (16kg)
21 box jumps (18")

11:50 mins

Reflections:
Really slow, been feeling like I can't seem to push myself any further on my own these days. Need to find root cause and get rid of it! Must re-motivate and re-focus.. Need to stop eating junk as well because I suspect that is one of the main cause for decreased performance...

Take a bite out of cravings

If you really think about it, craving patterns can be traced back to only 2 distinctions: salt and sugar.

Salt:
Chips
Snacks
Butter (bread)
Fried foods

Sugar:
Milo
Chocolate
Ice cream
(and then we have) Alcohol

There are people who have what we call a sweet tooth (sugar cravers), whereas others that prefer savoury foods (salt cravers). Then, there is me, a 'powerful' hybrid whereby I crave both salt and sugar (mainly chocolate!), so that makes me a combination craver or ultimate craver.

So I came up with a list of important guidelines on how to manage cravings:
1) Inculcate a weekly 90% clean 10% cheat diet/1 cheat MEAL per week diet
2) Consume lean protein and leafy vegetables for meals (ie Paleo diet)
3) Take healthy snacks (nuts or fruits) in between meals
4) For salt cravings, take plain nuts or meat
5) For sugar cravings, take fruits
6) For chocolate cravings, wait till cheat MEAL and take milo kosong or indulge in a square of 75% dark chocolate or take quality chocolate ice cream
7) Never practice starvation/fasting for long periods (This intensifies your cravings and slows down your metabolism)
8) Exercise regularly and keep yourself busy during the day, and choose good after-work activities to avoid unneccessary snacking (Watching TV has been shown to encourage snacking)
9) Get a good night's sleep (When the body is tired, it will always crave for sugar as sugar is one of the fastest energy-giver)
10) Stay positive, happy and disciplined in your efforts (even if it looks like you aren't getting results because if you do them constantly, they will definitely pay off in the end!)

What are some of your useful guidelines?

Vomitting Yong Tau Foo Is Not Fun

There is a fine line between being complacent and being confident.

Past few days have not been really good for me eating-wise, have been having cheat meals almost everyday, which made me gained 3 kgs. At first, it started out as stress eating due to my job. Then, CNY came with all its glorious dunno-how-many-hidden-calories tarts and cookies. Now, its partly also because I'm happier and more lax with my eating habits. It has been chips, ice cream, butter, milo in a repeated fashion. 3 kg is like a major deal for me because the scale seems to really hate me. No matter what exercise I do, I don't really lose much scale weight. So have fun guessing how heavy I really am... hahaha, hint: really heavy!

So yesterday, I went for hill sprints as smartly suggested by someone. Surprisingly, he programmed a pretty good warmup, was kinda impressed by that. But certainly not impressed by the fact that we ate so much yong tau foo before the sprints that I ended up vomitting after the 5th hill sprint. In total, we did 6 warmups and 6 hill sprints. Damn fun, everybody in MacRitchie is like either strolling around enjoying the scenery, playing or taking a leisure jog. Whereas, the two of us looked like we were dying and I don't think anybody was able to comprehend.

There's also something majorly wrong with me these days, which I suspect it might be due to me being affected over the weight gain. These days, I don't feel as 'strong' and I don't feel like I'm able to push hard enough anymore. My timing and strength is also deproving exponentially to my weight gain *sad* Oh wells, but everything comes with effort, determination and discipline. So I will just not think about it and march on.

Regarding the first line, I would just like to be very open and say that this is a major issue I face in my weight battles. Encouragement might spur you on but it kinda turns me in the other direction. I don't really wish to hear about how much I've trimmed down, because it makes me believe that I'm acceptable. Then, I get ahead of myself and think it's finally okay to eat like a normal person, when it's really not. I still have a long way to go and more goals to achieve. Ironically, I am also not asking for rude comments to be passed by me. Does anybody else face this as well? Or is it just me?

Ice Cream, Seaweed & Milo

Ice cream, seaweed and milo are some of my favourite indulges. What are some of yours? Leave it in the tagboard at the side...

Interestingly enough, society has accepted ice cream as a fat food, whereas seaweed as neutral and milo as a healthy one. I will just add on by saying that a certain company starting with N is one of the biggest buyer of sugar. So be careful about what you make as your daily staple.

And on another note (esply to self as well), if you are going to indulge in ice cream, look only for the following things:
1) Good Quality - no point wasting your calories over half-fucked not even chocolate tasting ice cream, get the real thing
2) Solid Texture - don't get soft runny lousy quality airy ice cream, get the fully packed solid creamy flavourful kinds
3) Full fat & full cream - trust me, everything else comes with this, to remove the veil from your eyes, avoid fat-free or low-fat at all costs. Usually these are the ice creams that come loaded with even more sugar than our body can handle. And we all know what sugar does to us. It makes people pregnant, so stay off it kids.

On a personal note, I am going to MacRitchie Reservoir for a jog! I hope the monkeys won't chase me again. Oh no, I am late..

Love,
Alyssa

Welcome again!

Welcome to BossaNovAlyssa v2!

It has been a really long time since I stopped blogging. I may be known to be a blog-hopper, however, I am still relatively loyal to blogspot due to me not being able to customize tumblr, livejournal or wordpress templates freely (which pisses me off badly). The only disadvantages left to blogspot is 1) enable password locking of selected entries, and 2) come up with a fucking good iPhone app already. So, being the lazy person I am, I decided to just revamp an old blog I had, you got to admit the name is pretty cool. (I'm just lazy to think of a new one....)

I hope that people who enter into this site will not be bored to death by what I write, but to be entranced by the music while sharing a part of my life with me. The purpose of this blog is also to test if I have the ability to be a proper blogger and not just the whiny i-do-this-and-that-oh-fuck-my-life everyday stint.

My focus this time will be on 1) Nutrition 2) Crossfit 3) Food & 4) Music. Well, stay tuned and see if I make it through. Of course there will be essays snippets of my personal life agonies as well :)
